Week in Review
Two Bald Eagles and three House Finches were released this week. One of the eagles had been shot. The other survived an encounter with power lines, nearly being electrocuted. Below one of the eagles heads out over the water at McKay Wildlife Refuge.
Next, intern Jordan released the three finches. The finches' nest had been destroyed when they were still nestlings.
New Admissions
There were eight new admissions this past week, including six raptors, a Collared Dove and a Least Chipmunk. The chipmunk probably did not need to be rescued by the well-meaning home owner in La Grande. She thought it was a baby squirrel, rather than a half grown chipmunk (weighing just 17 grams). It is doing well and will soon be ready to release.
Osprey 22-234
We received special permission to admit an Osprey that had been quarantined in Washington for two weeks. Unfortunately it had fractures of the right humerus and scapula that were not repairable and was euthanized.
Waiting for Dinner
Two of five young owls released at BMW’s Great Horned Owl hack site wait patiently for Tricia (dressed in her ghost costume) to deliver dinner. The owls are flying well. Normally their parents would still be feeding them as they perfect their hunting skills.
