The Week in Review

We are unable to treat Washington birds at our Pendleton center due to the continued presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza. As a result there were few admissions this past week. Smallest (and cutest) patient was a 34 gram Douglas Squirrel who made a 60 mile round trip before being discovered in the engine compartment of a vehicle. The squirrel is doing well and now weighs 38 grams.

Magpie Boots

It was becoming more apparent that the baby Magpie needed an orthopedic intervention to try and straighten its feet. We fashioned light-weight boots out of skin tape and styrofoam. Time will tell if we will be successful. So far the magpie is very tolerant of the foot-wear.

Western Painted Turtle Rescue

A Painted Turtle was trying to cross the road in Umatilla when a caring passerby rescued it and brought it to the Pendleton center. It had some minor abrasions, but was very active and we determined the best course of action was to release it at McNary Wildlife Refuge near where it was found.
