January 3 - January 9

The Week in Review

In the big scheme things, winter tends to be a slow time of year for BMW. In 2021, four birds were admitted in the first 9 days of the year. In the first nine days of 2022 there have been 16 admissions: 11 raptors, 4 songbirds and a bat.

Rough-legged Hawk 22-007

RLHA 22-007

Rough-legged Hawks fly south from the Arctic to spend the winter in Oregon and Washington. 22-007 was struck by a vehicle in Richland, WA. The hawk has a slight droop in the left wing, but we could find no fractures. Hopefully a few days of cage rest will provide the time needed for the hawk to recover from the collision.

Bald Eagle 22-015

BAEA 222-015

Bald Eagle 22-015 was found near Zillah, WA Sunday morning unable to fly. Volunteers Shelly, Gail and Virginia coordinated transportation and had the eagle in Pendleton by Sunday afternoon. An exam found no obvious injuries, but the eagle’s lead level was 23.2 micrograms/deciliter, a toxic amount of lead. Chelation to remove the lead from the eagle’s blood has been started. Above, Virginia holds the eagle as he recovers from anesthesia.
