The Week in Review

There were just nine new admissions in the past week, including three raptors, four varied thrushes and a northern flicker who had been shot. Sometimes we forget that we humans are the invasive species (or at least there are far too many of us) and we need to try and be a little more understanding of native wildlife, even when they try and find insects in the siding of our house. They would rather hunt for food by drilling into insect filled snags, but we often think if a tree dies it should be cut down. It is amazing how many critters either live in and/or find food in dead trees!

The flickers fractured humerus could not be repaired and the bird was euthanized.

Bird of the Week: Varied Thrush

Four varied thrushes were admitted, three from Pendleton and one from Athena. All flew into windows. Two died, one had to be euthanized due to its injuries and the bird below is recovering from its injuries.
