Merry Christmas from the Blue Mountain Wildlife Team
We are very grateful for your generous support throughout 2018 and wish you peace and joy throughout the holidays and in the coming year.
Northern Pygmy Owl 18-760
It was another busy week during our “slow” time of year. Admissions included six hawks, one Golden Eagle and three owls. The smallest and last admission of the week was a Northern Pygmy Owl. At 74 grams (about 2 1/2 ounces), she is a very well-fed female who was found in the middle of a road. It appears that she was stunned when hit by a car while trying to catch a mouse (found nearby in the road). Hopefully she will be ready for release within a day or two.
Golden Eagle 18-751
A Golden Eagle was found dead at the foot of a power pole in Morrow County near Heppner. The eagles’s wounds were consistent with a gunshot injury. A radiograph confirmed the eagle had been shot.
Hawk and Owl Releases
The week ended on a much better note with the release of three Red-tailed Hawks and a Great Horned Owl. It was intern Lahari’s first release. I told her to “just let the bird go, and he will fly away,” but the hawk had other ideas. After thinking about it for a few seconds, he did fly away.
Next, it was Samantha’s turns. Her hawk was more cooperative.
