The West is on Fire…
We are so lucky here in Pendleton. There have been no nearby fires, but like most of Oregon and Washington, our air quality is hazardous!
Last week the view to the west…
Today (Sunday) is better than Saturday, but still…
The view to the south in May...
And Sunday…
The Week in Review
I think it's safe to say that Baby Season is over. The last two young Barn Swallows will be released this week. There were just eight new admissions this past week including a Great Horned Owl, a Western Screech Owl, a Red-tailed Hawk and two more Common Nighthawks.
The challenge now that babies are grown is that we mainly see trauma cases. At least fewer birds are coming through the door. This has been the strangest year. Both wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians throughout the country have been busier than ever. BMW has admitted 61 more birds this year than were admitted in all of 2019. It seems that once we were past the initial lockdown phase of the pandemic, people were spending more time outside in their yards and noticing all kinds of wildlife. Now the smoke is keeping people inside again.
Peregrine Falcon 20-495
A young female Peregrine Falcon was admitted three weeks ago with a broken leg. The splint was removed a week ago and now she is ready to be moved outside to a mew.
(The feathers on the towel are from the quail she had for breakfast.)
