Thank You Volunteers
Five hardy BMW volunteers came armed with weed eaters, loppers, rakes and work gloves to help prepare for the October 19 Open House. Thank you Bill, Tiffany, Jack, Marilyn C and Marilyn J. We are looking good!
A Week of Owls
Seven raptors were admitted this past week: one Cooper’s Hawk, one Northern Saw-whet Owl, two Western Screech Owls, one Barn Owl, and two Great Horned Owls. The Cooper’s Hawk has a fractured clavicle. Her wing is immobilized, she has a hearty appetite and she is very feisty. All good signs. Now we must wait and see how the injury heals.
The Saw-whet Owl seems to have recovered from his bruised elbow. If he passes his test flight (as is expected) he will be released this week.
Flamm Update
We will remove the splint from the Flammulated Owl's leg on Monday. He has been using the leg more and more. You can see his little ear tufts in the photo above.
American White Pelican 19-498
We don’t know how this pelican was injured, but he has multiple wounds on his body and wings. He appears to have came crashing out of the sky near John Day, OR, miles from the nearest water. Bad weather and poor visibility may have been factors. He was dehydrated, but doesn’t appear to have any broken bones. Hopefully, after a few days of supportive care and lots of fish, he will be ready to continue migrating.
Three Cooper’s Hawk Releases
Three Cooper’s Hawks and a Great Horned Owl were released on a beautiful sunny day at McNary Wildlife Refuge in Burbank, WA.
