We are going to try again for a Facebook Live event. We will release a Red-tailed Hawk who suffered a gunshot injury the end of June. I think Winnie has gotten me straightened out so you will be able to see the live event on BMW’s Facebook page. Below is the radiograph taken when the hawk was admitted. If you look closely at the pellet you’ll notice it is perfectly round, even though it struck the bone with enough force to cause multiple fractures. That indicates it is a non-lead projectile. Lead is a fairly soft metal, deforming when it hits bone.
The Week in Review
Like September, October admissions are at a more typical level than during the spring and summer months. There were just 8 admissions this past week, including Great Horned Owl 20-559. The owl cannot fly because she is missing about half of the primary and secondary feathers on her left wing. It is unclear whether the feathers will be able to grow back due to tissue damage. We will have to wait and see. It is also unclear how the injury occurred.
