Many Thanks to The Kinsman Foundation
We are again grateful to The Kinsman Foundation for their continuing support of Blue Mountain Wildlife and wildlife rehab throughout Oregon and Washington. The foundation has awarded BMW a $12,000 grant for Operating Expenses in 2019. The funds will help care for hundreds of raptors in the coming months.
Releases at the REACH
On Thursday, KEPR and Univision reporter Maria Cortez documented the release of an American Kestrel and two Red-tailed Hawks in both English and Spanish at the REACH Museum in Richland.
Volunteer Janie released a kestrel who had been admitted in July with singed wing and tail feathers. She had molted all the damaged feathers and wasted no time in flying away.
Volunteer Janice released a hawk she had helped rescue, an adult Red-tailed Hawk who was admitted with an oily substance on his feathers. After two baths and a short stint in a flight pen, he was ready to go.
Good Samaritan Buck released a Red-tailed Hawk he had pulled from the grill of a car. The hawk was hit some 30 miles from the Tri-Cities and rode to town trapped in the grill. To make matters worse, the hawk had been shot a week or two earlier and had an infected wound in her leg. Fortunately, she recovered quickly.
Volunteer Marla took video of the releases (the source of the above photos) and an excited group of pre-schoolers cheered as each bird flew away.
