Happy Mother’s Day to Moms Everywhere
Avian Influenza is Here
Avian Influenza has been found in both Oregon and Washington. All birds can catch the virus, but raptors are particularly susceptible. To protect BMW’s Ambassador Birds and current rehab birds, an initial intake and quarantine area has been set up in the Small Bird Test Flight Pen which is adjacent to the Visitor Parking area. New birds will be quarantined for five days before being moved into the clinic. BMW will be closed to the public until avian influenza is no longer a threat to our resident birds. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these challenging times.
Great Horned Owl Release
Great Horned Owl 22-072 was admitted March 4, 2022 after being struck by a vehicle. She suffered head trauma and both scapulas (shoulder blades) were fractured. Initially we were not very hopeful she would be releasable. Fortunately the owl proved us wrong. Three weeks after admission she was moved outside to a small mew. From there she was moved to a flight pen where she quickly demonstrated the silent flight typical of owls. On Saturday she was released at the Haines Cemetery not far from where she had been hit by a car. Thank you to Caitlin Knight for sending photos of the release.
