A Record Year for Baby Barn Owls

The first baby Barn Owl in 2017 was admitted on April 1. A total of 81 owls were raised that year. This year, the first baby Barn Owls arrived on March 2. At the current rate, we will have admitted more than 81 babies by April 1. The 4 owls below came from a haystack near Stanfield, OR that was sold on March 22.

 Screech Owl Reunion

We were hoping to reunite the two young Western Screech Owls admitted March 17 with their parents and sibling, but it didn’t work out quite the way we had hoped. The remaining sibling fledged and ended up on the ground in the neighbor’s yard with no sign of an adult. Like the first two, the owlet was under weight. It has joined its siblings at the center. As of this weekend they are eating whole mice so will go out to a nest box in preparation for release.

Behind the Scene with the Bald Eagles

The short video below shows the male Bald Eagle bringing a stick to the nest. Toward the end of the clip is a link to a 30 minute video that shows the two eagles working together, more or less. As one might expect, the female seems to have the final word on how the furniture is arranged.

And the next day… there is an egg!
