Golden Eagle 18-353

The first bird of the week was a Golden Eagle whose leg had been caught in a trap. He was found with the trap still on his leg and the chain anchoring the trap was tangled in a fence. The trap had been on the eagle’s leg long enough for the foot to turn black. There was nothing to do  but euthanize the eagle.

Black-crowned Night Heron 18-325 Update

The heron’s left leg was fractured just above the foot. Once the splint was removed, it immediately was able to use the foot.

Welcome Shyla

Saturday we welcomed new intern Shyla, a wildlife ecology major at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She quickly went to work. One of her first lessons was in feeding baby songbirds.

Bald Eagle 18-380

The week ended with the admission of a young Bald Eagle who somehow had severed the tip of his right wing. The very tips of his tail feathers had also been cut off. If only he could speak and tell us what had happened.
