Downy Woodpeckers 20-283, 20-284, 20-285
These small woodpeckers were admitted on June 17, 2020. Two weighed 14 grams, the third weighed just 7 grams. Their world was turned upside down when the tree containing their nest cavity was cut down. One month later two weighed 25 grams and the third weighed 24 grams. They were full grown and self-feeding and moved outside to the Songbird Pen. In the coming week they will be returned to Baker City for release.
The moral of this story is to prune or remove trees in the fall and winter months when birds are not nesting.
