Busy Busy Busy
Usually business begins to slow down a bit in July. Not so this year. There were 34 new arrivals this past week, including an American Goldfinch, a Red-naped Sapsucker and a Double-crested Cormorant. There were 14 raptors: 1 Kestrel, 1 Cooper’s Hawk, 5 Swainson’s Hawks, 2 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Osprey, 5 Barn Owls (3 nestlings and 2 fledglings) and a second starving Golden Eagle fledgling (the third young eagle in 3 weeks).
Changing of the Interns
Below is intern Zabrina, full-time BMW employee Samantha, part-time BMW employee Winnie and intern Shyla.
We said goodby to Zabrina this past week, as she returned to Puerto Rico to prepare for a new school year. New intern Nicole arrived Sunday afternoon from Utah, giving Shyla time to show her the ropes before she returns to school in Massachusetts today (Monday). Thank you Zabrina and Shyla for all your hard work! Welcome Nicole! Wendy, a Veterinary Technician student at Portland Community College, will join Nicole on Tuesday.
Golden Eagle: 18-511
Perhaps the hot weather is making it hard for Golden Eagles to find enough food for their young. Ground squirrels have gone under ground to avoid the heat. Jack rabbit populations are still recovering from the harsh weather the winter before last. 18-511 is an emaciated fledgling from east of Yakima. She is responding well to supportive care and already getting feisty.
