Week in Review

There were four new admissions this past week: one Red-tailed Hawk, one Western Screech Owl and two Great Horned Owls. The hawk had a compound humerus fracture that was not repairable and was euthanized.

Great Horned Owl 20-020 was found hanging by his left wing in a barbed-wire fence, with lacerations on both sides of the wing. The wounds looked much better once they were cleaned and closed with skin staples.   After a couple days of fluid therapy his appetite returned. The prognosis seems good for a complete recovery.

WESO 20-019

Western Screech Owl 20-019 was admitted with a head injury and a hemorrhagic left eye. The eye is looking much better. His appetite didn’t skip a beat. He’s eating two mice per night.

Great Horned Owl 20-020 is the fifth gunshot bird admitted this year. He was found near Yakima with a humerus fracture that was non-repairable and two fractures in his right tibiotarsus. At 16.2 mcg/dl, his blood lead level was the highest we have measured in a Great Horned Owl.
