Great Horned Owl vs Barbed-wire Fence
The first admission last week was a Great Horned Owl whose right wing had become tangled in a barbed-wire fence. When found, the owl was standing on a fence wire with his wing stuck to the wire above. It took an hour to clean and suture the wound. So far the sutures are holding, although there may be some areas where the skin will slough. We remain cautiously optimistic that the owl will be the ultimate victor.
Christmas Red-tailed Hawk
Christmas day ended on a sad note with the admission of an adult Red-tailed Hawk. X-rays taken the following day at Pendleton Veterinary Clinic confirmed the hawk had been shot with a shotgun. In addition to fracturing his right humerus and causing extensive internal hemorrhaging, at least two pellets passed through the hawk damaging his left elbow and right hip. The injuries were too extensive to repair and he was humanely euthanized.
