Bald Eagle 19-534 Released
Last November an immature Bald Eagle was found along the highway near Wallowa, OR. He was quite thin and unable to fly. An exam revealed old, partially healed fractures of his left coracoid (in the shoulder) and left leg. He had likely been hit by a car two or three weeks earlier. More often than not, coracoid fractures do not heal well, but 19-534 defied the odds! As luck would have it, Marty Stevens found a nestling Great Horned Owl along the railroad tracks in Enterprise with no idea where the owlet came from. We met Marty in LaGrande where we traded one Bald Eagle for a fuzzy Great Horned Owl. Marty transported the eagle back to Wallowa and released him. Thank you Marty!
Week In Review
The Tri-Cities Center has a total of 27 baby Barn Owls. Almost all have come from haystacks that have been moved. There were 11 new admissions at the Pendleton Center. Just two were raptors, the young owl from Enterprise and an adult Northern Harrier with coracoid and scapula fractures that were not repairable.
The tiniest admissions were three hatchling American Gold Finches whose nest was blown to the ground. They all appear to be uninjured and they have amazing appetites!
A Canada gosling managed to impale his leg on a stick when he jumped out of his nest which was on a nesting platform (formerly occupied by osprey). There was no sign of his family by the time he was rescued. Fortunately we have identified a foster family whose babies hatched this weekend. After completing a course of antibiotics he will be fostered into his new family.
