The Heat Wave of 2021

The past week was like no other that I can recall. Early in the week temperatures were well above 100 degrees and baby Cooper’s Hawks and Swainson’s Hawks were trying to escape the heat by jumping out of their nests. BMW’s Tri-Cities center admitted more than 70 young Cooper’s Hawks. The Pendleton center admitted 118 birds, 47 of which were nestling Swainson’s Hawks and Cooper’s Hawks. Thirteen of the hawks were badly injured and had to be euthanized. The remaining are doing well and eating an incredible amount of food. Below are seven half grown Swainson’s Hawks.

Golden Eagle 21-515

GOEA 21-515 fledge

A fledgling Golden Eagle was found in the road near Mattawa, WA Sunday afternoon. The finder transported the eagle to the Tri-Cities and met volunteers Kenny and Janie who transported him to BMW’s Pendleton center. An exam and x-rays found no broken bones or obvious injuries. The eagle appears to have collided either with the pavement or a vehicle on one  of his very first flights. He does squint his left eye indicating he may have a head injury. The hope is to reunite him with his family as soon as possible.

American Goldfinch 21-514 Rescued from Sticky Trap

AMGO sticky trap

An adult American Goldfinch lost all of his tail feathers and most of the secondary feathers on both of his wings after getting stuck on a sticky trap. He will have to grow new feathers before he can fly. Please be careful when using sticky traps to catch unwanted insects.
